Mumbai-based Arjun Rathi Design renowned for its unique collections merges art, design and function. They have launched an elegant lighting range known as the Shikhara Collection.
The formation of the light inspired by the ‘shikhara,’ typical of Indian and Buddhist temple architecture. The shikhara forms are representative of the five elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Ether. It always form the top of these temples.
The lighting series design takes inspiration from the shikhara form, by representing the five elements. The form mirrors the opposite elements of fire and water, and wind and earth, respectively, in hand blown glass. A conical pyramid represents the fifth element.
In temples, brass bells and traditional chains have importance in all day prayers. This is a very important detail as these chains hang from the centre of all the shikharas. Here, Arjun Rathi Design incorporated the traditional chain detail to hold the apex cone detail of the installation. This has a strong resemblance to the one in Indian temples.
The lighting collection constitutes a combination of blown glass and brass manufactured by artisans in India; where the glass gives transparency to the vertical form. The Shikhara series has been designed in four editions to accommodate it in all types of spaces, where each varies in its height i.e. 9 feet, 6 feet, 4 feet, 3 feet and can be finished in choices of metal and glass finishes. This one-of-a-kind range brings a personal touch and instantly adds a unique character to the room. This striking lighting evokes emotions and exudes personality.

Arjun Rathi Design is a multi-disciplinary studio working across Architecture & Lighting Design. Many of us spend the majority of our time living and working in different environments lit by artificial light. As a studio, we aim to interpret space through the lens of lighting, design fixtures, and installations that can capture our imagination and inspire us in these spaces.
Working on both ends of the design spectrum, from single pieces made together with craftsmen to mass-produced objects developed in collaboration with the manufacturers; the studio is not defined by a particular style, but rather by questioning objects while considering their context and cultural associations embedded in them. We take care of each project phase, from on-site visits, exploratory studies, design, and technical drawings to the final production and space atmosphere. Depending on the commission, we either design with a specific space in mind, or we work detached from it, sometimes resulting in a product usable in various spaces. The final product and accessories are always produced in our manufactory, and therefore quality-certified.
