The Indian Ministry of Railways has launched the ambitious ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ aimed at transforming & redeveloping railway stations across the country. This comprehensive initiative focuses on the redevelopment of stations to enhance passenger amenities, improve infrastructure, and integrate multimodal transportation facilities. With a strategic vision for long-term development, the scheme emphasizes the creation of modern, sustainable, and passenger-friendly railway hubs.

The scheme also envisages improvement of buildings, integration of the station with both sides of the city, multimodal integration, amenities for ‘Divyangjans’, and sustainable & environment-friendly solutions. Furthermore, it involves the provision of ballastless tracks, ‘Roof Plazas’ as per requirement, phasing & feasibility, and creating city centers at the station in the long term.

So far, 1318 stations have been identified for development/redevelopment under this scheme. 1251 stations have been developed under the ‘Adarsh Stations Scheme’ on Indian Railways. Moreover, of these, Biltrax Construction Data is tracking the progress of over 784 railway projects across India. 1. RLDA Redevelopment of Railway Station, New Delhi

Construction Cost – INR 4,700 Crore

New Delhi Railway Station is one of India’s largest and busiest railway stations, with a current handling capacity of approximately 400 trains and 4.5 lakh passengers daily. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has proposed the redevelopment of the railway station at an estimated construction cost of INR 4,700 Crore. The project will sprawl across an anticipated 112.33 Acres of land parcel.

The scope of work includes constructing the twin dome main station building & linear station buildings alongside platforms no 1 & 16. Additionally, it will comprise house retail, shops, railway operational areas, waiting rooms, passenger lounges, cloakrooms, and a multi-modal transit hub, among others.

RLDA floated the tender for this project in February 2024. Tractebel Engineering Pvt Ltd serves as the design architect for this project, alongside RITES Limited as the Urban Designer.


2. RLDA Redevelopment of CSMT Railway Station, Mumbai

Construction Cost – INR 2,450 Crore

The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has undertaken the redevelopment of the CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) Railway Station. As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, RLDA will modernize the station premises. This project, estimated to cost INR 2,450 Crore, aims to use state-of-the-art technology to enhance passenger amenities as well as maximize revenue. 

The upcoming project envisages the development of administrative buildings, concourses, retail floors, FOBs, a guest house, an office building, etc. These will be developed at suburban, long-distance, and heritage nodes. The project covers an impressive 80.3 acres of land.

ANA Design Studio Pvt Ltd serves as the design architect for this project, whereas Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Limited is the general turnkey contractor.


3. RLDA Redevelopment of Railway Station, Ahmedabad

Construction Cost – INR 2,000 Crore

The proposed redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station aims to enhance the second-highest income-generating division of Western Railways. The project’s estimated cost is INR 2,000 Crore.

The scope of work involves the construction of a new station building, a multi-modal transit hub, multi-level parking, railway offices and private/commercial offices. The facility will also have a 3-star hotel, dedicated access roads, an iconic tower, a parcel handling facility, and a washable apron track.

RLDA will redevelop surplus land along existing railway property as a separate commercial entity. Additionally, it will undertake the redevelopment work of Ahmedabad Railway Station and parts of its colony. The project will have state-of-the-art technology to provide better passenger amenities and maximize revenue.

Tractebel Engineering Pvt Ltd was appointed through a competitive bidding process, to ensure successful project implementation. The firm prepared a Feasibility Study, a Detailed Master Plan, and Urban Design. Furthermore, it’s responsible for Engineering, and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Integrated redevelopment project.


4. RLDA Redevelopment of Railway Station, Thane

Construction Cost – INR 1,000 Crore

The Indian Railways has proposed to revamp and redevelop the existing Thane Railway Station. It will include railway platform upgradation and station modification. It also includes ramping up of passenger amenities and foot-over bridges. The estimated cost of the project is INR 1,000 Crore.

As of March 2024, the Thane Corporation has granted in-principle approval to all the mandatory requests sought from the railways for the project.


5. NCR Redevelopment of Railway Station, Prayagraj

Construction Cost – INR 860 Crore

Proposed redevelopment of Prayagraj Railway Station, Uttar Pradesh

The Indian Ministry of Railways is actively developing Prayagraj Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh, under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme. The project comprises the development of the station’s infrastructure, platforms, and related facilities. Additionally, key elements include the construction of an arrival and departure station building, north and south side station buildings, a basement block, a parcel block, and a railway office block.

The project sprawls across an anticipated 271.03 Acres of land with a construction cost of approximately INR 860 Crore. Arinem Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd is the design architect for this project, whereas Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt Ltd is the general turnkey contractor.

As of March 2024, the team has completed the plinth work for the main station building and has also placed the reinforcement for the superstructure.


6. WR Redevelopment of Railway Station, Ujjain

Construction Cost – INR 825 Crore

PM Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw recently virtually laid the foundation stone for the upcoming Ujjain Railway Station. The project envisages upgrading the station’s infrastructure, platforms, and related facilities. It will be developed at an estimated INR 825 Crore.

Arinem Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd serves as the design architect for this project.


7. SR Redevelopment of Railway Station, Chennai Egmore

Construction Cost – INR 740 Crore

Proposed redevelopment of Chennai Egmore Railway Station, Tamil Nadu

The project envisages redevelopment of the Chennai Egmore Railway Station in Tamil Nadu, involving the construction of the station, allied facilities, and essential infrastructure. Additionally, it includes commercial development on leasehold rights on vacant railway land near Chennai Egmore Railway Station. It includes all types of real estate planned on railway land, situated above the Project Railway Station but not part of the station.

The project’s estimated construction cost is INR 740 Crore. Creative Group serves as the Concept Design Consultant alongside DEC Infrastructure & Projects (India) Pvt Ltd as the general turnkey contractor for this project.

85% of the work was completed on the Poonamalle High Road side section, as of March 2024. Furthermore, the pile foundation work is completed for MLCP on the side of Gandhi Irwin Road,


8. SECR Redevelopment of Railway Station, Bilaspur

Construction Cost – INR 440 Crore

Proposed redevelopment of Bilaspur Railway Station, Chhattisgarh

The upcoming project envisages the redevelopment of Bilaspur Railway Station under the South East Central Railway, Bilaspur. The scope of work includes the main station building on the North East and South West side as well as a 36 m wide air concourse, a substation building, a post office & parcel.

Moreover, the project involves partial construction of a Railway English Medium Boys School, new Platforms 1 & 2 with an approximate total area of 19,454.89 SqFt. The project will be developed at an estimated INR 440 Crore.

Arinem Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd serves as the design architect for this project. As of March 2024, the tender has been floated for the selection of an EPC Contractor.


9. SCR Redevelopment of Railway Station, Secunderabad

Construction Cost – INR 699 Crore

The South Central Railway (SCR), under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, has undertaken the major upgradation of Secunderabad railway station in Telangana. The proposed project aims to enhance the passenger experience by providing state-of-the-art amenities and facilities.

The project’s estimated construction cost is INR 699 Crore. The scope of work involves the construction of the north side terminal building, a multi-level car parking, a basement and a canopy area. On the southern side, constructing the station building, separate underground parking, existing building renovation, basement, canopy, service blocks, and FOB area.

Sikka Associates Architects serves as the design architect, with Girdhari Lal Constructions Pvt Ltd as the general turnkey contractor for this project.


10. NWR Redevelopment of Railway Station, Jaipur

Construction Cost – INR 577 Crore

Proposed redevelopment of Jaipur Railway Station, Rajasthan

North Western Railway is actively developing the Jaipur Railway station premises, under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The project envisages the redevelopment of the Station, including new front and rear station buildings, and an air concourse connecting both buildings, among other works.

The project encompasses an impressive 41.19 Acres of land with an estimated construction cost of INR 577 Crore.

The basement work of the MLCP is in progress along with other allied works, as of March 2024.
