The Indore Smart City Mission is a part of the Smart Cities Mission. It is an initiative by the Government of India to drive India into the age of advancement through economic growth. This advancement rests on the shoulders of India’s cities, which are the engines of economic growth. These cities are contributing 63% of India’s GDP, even though only 31% of the population lives in these urban areas. The Mission envisions promoting mixed land use in area-based developments–planning for ‘unplanned areas’ containing a range of compatible activities. Land uses that are close to one another in order to make land use more efficient. Flexibility in land use and building bye-laws will be possible thanks to the States.
The Government of Indore held a competition for providing consultancy services for the proposed Sports City Mixed-Use Complex at Indore, Madhya Pradesh. In the Indore Metropolitan Region, the project is a public-private venture by the Indore Smart City Development Limited. There were three competitors, Sandeep Shikre and Associates, Vivek Bhole Architects Private Limited (Neo Modern Arch), and Hiten Sethi Architects.
As of May 2022, Indore Smart City Development Limited has appointed Hiten Sethi Architects as Consultant Architects for the ISCDL Sports City Mixed-Use Complex. The Consultant Architects will provide their consultancy services for Architectural Master Planning. They will produce a detailed design, Project Management Consulting (PMC), project handling, and work on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for the proposed Sports City Mixed-Use Complex at Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The project’s construction will begin in 2022 and will be completed by 2027. With the estimated cost of INR 500 crores, the project spreads across a land parcel of 20,00,000 sq. ft.

Smart cities or competition is the method of selecting cities for funding and using a strategy of area-based development. Indore has carried out one of the widest citizen engagement programmes for the shaping of vision, goals and strategies, selection and planning of ABD and Pan-city proposals. The exercise was extensive both in terms of participation and the diversity of mediums used. The extent of citizens involved over 25% of the city population (with 591965 interactions through all mediums). And Indore having a historical background starting from the 1800s is a challenge accepted by the city to strengthen its identity and enhance its associational values.
Indore has been successful in the competition for implementing smart solutions in the first phase based on its Smart City proposal (SCP). This SCP comprised an Area-Based Development (ABD) as well as a PAN-City solution. They scored the Proposal based on the quality of city-level criteria like vision and goals, strategic plan etc, and the quality of proposals for ABD and PAN-city solutions.
