Tata Steel and the Government of Punjab have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a 0.75 million tonne per year (MnTPA) long products steel facility with an electric arc furnace(EAF) that runs on scrap.
Tata Steel commits to investing in a circular economy and switching to low-carbon steelmaking through the use of recycled steel. A prominent example is an initiative to build a new greenfield facility in Kadiana Khurd, Hitech Valley, Ludhiana, Punjab. This action contributes to the company’s objective of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2045.
According to the company’s press release, the cutting-edge EAF-based steel mill will produce construction-grade steel rebar under the company’s main retail brand, Tata Tiscon. This will also allow Tata Steel further to strengthen its market presence in the construction sector.
Tata Steel opened its 0.5 MnTPA steel recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana, in August 2021. It is the nation’s first cutting-edge facility for processing scrap. Tata Steel intervenes across the value chain and is committed to lowering its carbon footprint during product manufacturing and life cycle. This aligns with their goals to achieve their net zero aim and to become a pioneer in sustainability. The Company wants to reduce its CO2 emissions in India to 2 tCO2/TCS by 2025 and 1.8 tCO2/TCS by 2030.
