On May 11, 2023, through video conferencing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre at Jatni in Odisha’s Khordha district.

The project, worth INR 650 crore, aims to establish a 200-bed cancer hospital, which is expected to be completed within two to three years. Last year, the Centre had announced its intention to construct a state-of-the-art cancer hospital on the premises of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Bhubaneshwar.

For this collaborative project, the Department of Atomic Energy, the administrative department of NISER, along with Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and Tata Trusts, will be involved. The Centre will allocate INR 400 crore towards the project, while Tata Trusts will contribute the remaining INR 250 crore. As part of the arrangement, NISER will provide 17 acres of land from its campus, and the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will share 13 acres of available land near the NISER campus.
