The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to construct a ‘Bow String’ bridge at the northern end of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) to connect the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) with the high-speed corridor.
The MCRP, spanning 10.58 kilometers from the Princess Street flyover near Marine Drive to BWSL, aims to enhance north-south connectivity and improve vehicular movement in Mumbai.
The decision to opt for a ‘Bow-String’ bridge was based on its ability to eliminate the need for additional piling work and ensure that removing one monopile does not endanger the structure. High-tension chords will provide support for the bridge, making it suitable for smaller bridges that do not require strong foundations.
The bridge will be approximately 120 meters long, and vehicles heading north on the coastal road from Marine Drive will cross it after reaching the traffic interchange in Worli. The BMC targets completion of the project by November 2023, although there is a possibility of the deadline being extended to May 2024 due to a design change, as per civic sources.
