World’s upcoming largest museum – Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum, Delhi

Delhi is set to house the world’s largest museum named ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum’. The museum will be located on Kartavya Path (formerly known as “Rajyapath”) and will replace the existing National Museum. 

The proposed museum will cover 11,700 SqM of land parcel and will incorporate 950 rooms. It will be divided into eight segments narrating the vast history of India over 5,000 years. The proposed museum entails a basement and three storeys and will be housed in the North and South blocks of the old Parliament building. 

Project Highlights:

As the name “Yuge Yugeen Bharat’ in Sanskrit suggests – everlasting India, the museum is designed to capture the eternal characteristics of India’s history. PM Modi, during the inauguration of the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Center (IECC), said a country establishes close relationships with other nations when it starts conserving its own heritage. With the aim to take pride in our heritage, the Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum was announced on International Museum Day (May 18).

The museum will showcase the rich civilizational culture of India through the following segments – 

• Ancient Indian Knowledge

• Ancient to Medieval

• Medieval to transition phase

• Modern India

• The Colonial rule

• The freedom struggle

• 100 years from 1947 onwards and the vision ahead.

On May 18, 2023,  the PM also launched a virtual walkthrough of the upcoming museum. It emphasized not only the culture and the eras of Indian history but also the flora and fauna of the nation. The museum will also document intellectual and artistic accomplishments including –

• Prehistoric India, Indus Valley, and Vedic era

• Top universities in India like – Takshashila and Nalanda

• Various dynasties that played crucial roles in not only India’s development but also maintained trading connections with Rome and Greece, such as – Maurya, Gupta, Pandya, Pallav, Chola, Kushans, Kashmir, and Rashtrakutas.

• Highlighting areas like – Rajput’s bravery, Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal era, along with the British Empire and the struggle for independence in India.

• Distinctive metallurgical traditions of historical groups e.g., extraction of Zinc in Zawar, Rajasthan

• One of the museum floors will be entirely dedicated to ancient Sindhi-Saraswati, focusing on locations like – Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, and Lothal.

The museum will also have a display of sacred “Peethas” and temples to preserve the nation’s Holy heritage.

Another component will be dedicated to the great battles of India – including the battle for freedom over the century-long British occupation. Different battles like the Sanyasi insurrection in Bengal in 1770, the sadhus rebelling against the repressive government, the Indian revolt of 1857 – where a few Indians completely overthrew the East India Company, etc. will be displayed in this segment.

The last segment will display the factors that helped shape the current Indian constitution, such as – the fight for Civil rights, scientific developments, and other significant facts.

Apart from these, the museum will also highlight India’s contribution to segments like mathematics, science and technology. The emphasis for this segment will be on the contributions of Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr B R Ambedkar and Gandhi.

Additionally, the museum will also recognise tribal independence fighters for the first time. Moreover, ancient artifacts and other rich collections from the National Museum will be shifted to the Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum.

Currently, the British Museum in London and the Grand Louvre in Paris are the largest museums in the world occupying approximately 70,000 SqM area. However, this will change in the future with the establishment of the National Museum (over 117,000 SqM land area). It will be a landmark to display the history, culture, and rich heritage of India.
