HPCL to set up 2G bio-refinery plant worth 1,400 INR-Crore in Punjab

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) announced the setting up of a second-generation (2G) bio-refinery plant in Bhatinda, Punjab. This project with an estimated cost of 1400 INR-Crore, is being developed as an initiative to tackle the issue of stubble burning in the state.

The plant will reproduce Ethanol using the paddy straw and blend it with Petrol under the Ethanol Blending Program of the Central Government. It is anticipated to generate 100 Kilo Liter (KL) Ethanol/ day using 570 MT of paddy straw/ day (2,00,000 MT per annum) once it starts operating at full capacity. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), NCR and adjoining areas is monitoring the progress of the project.

The Biomass procurement has already begun for this project and will accelerate in the coming days. HPCL is working with the State Government of Punjab, District Administration, and Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) to streamline and resolve procurement issues. Agreements have been established with Self Help Groups (SHGs), Bathinda and nearby areas for paddy straw procurement.
