Mumbai: First Underground Tunnel Road Project at Marine Drive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Maharashtra for the inauguration of the MTHL (Mumbai Transharbour Link/ Atal Setu), on Friday, January 12, also laid the foundation stone for the Underground Tunnel Road with an estimated construction cost of INR 8700 Crore.

The 9.2 km long underground tunnel road connects the Eastern Freeway from Orange Gate to Marine Drive. The tunnel will pass below city roads with heavy traffic, railway tracks, metro lines, and utilities and is poised to save travel time between Mumbai’s two prime locations. It is also expected to reduce traffic congestion at Orange Gate and the main Post Office Square on PD Mello Marg.

Apart from the underground tunnel road, the PM also inaugurated and laid foundation stones of several infra projects in Mumbai worth an estimated INR 30,500 Crore, including Twin Tunnels between Borivali and Thane, the fourth Railway corridor between Kharkopar and Uran, Inauguration of Digha Gaon Railway Station, Mothagaon-Mankoli Bridge, and the formally launched the first line of the Metro.
