Bullet train project: NHSRCL announces contract award for Thane depot construction

NHSRCL (National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd), overseeing the development of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project, announced on Tuesday, January 16, that the contract for the design and construction of the Thane Rolling Stock Depot has been awarded to Dineshchandra-DMRC. The JV (Joint Venture) between Dineshchandra R Agrawal (DRA) Infracon and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has received the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) for the same.

The scope of work includes civil works, inspection sheds, maintenance depot construction, and installation, testing & commissioning of maintenance facilities. The Thane depot will be developed over an anticipated 55 hectares of land parcel and involves the construction of facilities for light maintenance of train sets, four inspection lines (with scope to extend to eight in future), and 10 stabling lines (with future extension scope to 31 lines).

The overall Bullet train project (Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-speed rail corridor) includes three rolling stock depots at Sabarmati, Surat, and Thane. While the Sabarmati depot is the largest among the three occupying an anticipated 83 hectares, the Surat depot is the smallest depot sprawling across approximately 40 hectares.

The Sabarmati Depot construction was awarded to Sojitz-L&T Consortium and started commissioning in January 2023. The project involves the construction of facilities for light and heavy maintenance train sets, inspection bays, a washing plant, workshops, sheds, and 10 stabling lines (proposed to increase to 29 in the future). The Surat depot is currently under construction and was awarded to L&T Construction.
