The Railway Board has sanctioned the final location survey for the new Puri-Konark Railway line. The DPR (Detailed Project Report) has been prepared for the 32 km-long railway line connecting two major tourist destinations of Odisha. It will bypass the Balukhand Sanctuary as well as the eco-sensitive zone.
PM Narendra Modi had sanctioned the proposed Puri-Konark Rail line in February. The upcoming project is estimated to cost INR 491 Crore, whereas it will be completed within two years of commencement. It will include the construction of three railway stations at Poratara, Bhinguradhia, and Konark. Additionally, it will comprise 27 minor bridges, eight major bridges, two road over bridges, and 21 road under bridges.

The proposed rail line will pass over the Nuanai, Dhanua, and Kurhabhadra rivers and touch 37 villages. It will also connect the Sun Temple at Konark with the Shree Jagannath Temple at Puri. The authorities plan to acquire 215.91 hectares of land for this project. Furthermore, for the smooth movement of passenger trains, the authorities will construct a two-line station at Konark with an absolute block signalling system. Post-commissioning the new Puri-Konark Railway line will promote spiritual, heritage and coastal tourism while boosting regional economy.
