Southern Railways has launched the construction of the Aroor-Kumbalam railway bridge. It will stretch approximately 854.5 M, making it the second-longest bridge in Kerala. Scheduled for completion within two years, this project promises to enhance connectivity in the region.
The new bridge is being built parallel to the existing railway structure over the Vembanad and Kaithapuzha lakes. It will become the fifth bridge in this section, further bolstering the rail network across these scenic water bodies.

This development is part of the ongoing work along the Ernakulam-Aroor section. Three bridges are under construction in this section, worth a combined estimated 208 INR-Crore. The other two bridges include the Konthuruthy-Nettoor (152.5 M) and Nettoor-Kumbalam (158.6 M). Southern Railways plans to complete all three bridges within two years.
The Aroor-Kumbalam railway will not only improve rail infrastructure but also ensure faster, seamless journeys along Kerala’s scenic coastal line. Additionally, the 102 Km Ernakulam-Kayamkulam coastal line has already seen significant progress. Currently, track doubling is approved along the 23 Km stretch between Ernakulam, Kumbalam, and Turavur. Land acquisition for the Ernakulam-Turavur section is nearing its final stage, with completion expected by November-end.
