On Sunday, January 12, Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru laid the foundation stone for the underground drainage (UGD) project in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Valued at an estimated 471 INR-Crore, this initiative falls under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme.
The underground drainage project will resolve the long-standing lack of drainage in areas merged into Madurai Corporation in 2011. The plan includes laying 500 Km of pipelines, building 20 lifting stations, and installing nine pumping stations. Additionally, it will connect 79,227 households across 31 wards, enhancing sanitation and basic infrastructure in these underserved regions.

Furthermore, work will be divided into two zones for better efficiency. Vaigai North will serve 16 wards, while Vaigai South will cover 15 wards. This structured approach ensures seamless execution and timely delivery of the project. It will improve sanitation, benefit thousands of residents, and mark a significant step toward a cleaner, healthier Madurai.
