Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is set to expand its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha, aiming to double its production capacity from 4.4 MTPA to 9.4 MTPA by 2030. With an estimated investment of 30,000 INR-Crore, this expansion will play a key role in helping SAIL reach its ambitious target of 35 MTPA steel output.

Rourkela Steel Plant, India’s first public sector steel facility, stands 320 Km from Bhubaneswar. The upcoming mega greenfield project will cover 1,200 Acres on its southeastern side. Several major infrastructure additions will take shape, including a new raw material handling plant, coke oven stamp charge battery, and sinter plant. The project will also introduce a thin slab caster-direct rolling mill, a cold rolling mill with a silicon mill, and a modern blast furnace along with a steel melting shop.

To streamline logistics, a dedicated railway line is under construction from Dumertra station to RSP. This will further reduce congestion at Bondamunda Yard and ensure smoother transportation. Meanwhile, this expansion aligns with the National Steel Policy, which envisions a 300 MTPA capacity by 2030.
