Odisha’s renewable energy landscape is set for a major upgrade with the Upper Indravati Hydro Power Project receiving final approval from the Central Electricity Authority. This 600 MW pumped storage project, valued at an estimated 3,160 INR-Crore, will enhance the state’s hydropower capacity.

The Upper Indravati Hydro Power Project features a unique design with an underground powerhouse. It includes four reversible turbines, each generating 150 MW, alongside a transformer hall with a step-up transformer and GI Switchyard. WAPCOS serves as the project management consultant, and OHPC plans to float tenders for contractors soon. Furthermore, located 500 M from the existing Upper Indravati Power House in Mukhiguda, Kalahandi district, Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) is spearheading the project.

This initiative is part of OHPC’s broader vision, which includes two other projects—500 MW Balimela PSP and 600 MW Upper Kolab PSP—aiming to increase the corporation’s capacity from 2,100 MW to 3,800 MW. The project aligns with India’s clean energy goals, positioning Odisha as a hydropower hub in eastern India.
