Construction of an integrated building between the domestic and the international terminal at the city airport is progressing fast as shutdown norms have been relaxed and more workers and materials could be brought in without a hassle.
After completing civil work and cladding a portion of the building with glass panels, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is going to begin electrical work in the new terminal. A contractor will be engaged in a month to carry out the electrical work at the terminal building. More tenders will be floated for interior work in the coming months.
The work that got stalled resumed in a small manner in April and June, picking up pace in the past two months. Installation of truss for the roof is getting completed after which panels will be installed.
“The installation of canopy work is going on over the transit tube for passengers that links the domestic and international terminal closer to the airside,” said an official. Though the old domestic terminal was demolished, the transit tube was retained for passengers to move between the existing steel and glass terminals.
“The limitations which were there in the past couple of months will not be there as the government has relaxed lockdown norms. Earlier, there was a problem in getting workers and moving components and equipment,” he said. “The terminal is likely to be completed by June.”
The terminal missed its September deadline that was postponed because of shutdown. The airport could resume work at the end of April because workers were still staying in a camp when the shutdown was announced.
The Rs 2,000 crore project spread over 1,97,000sqm area began in 2018. After the building is commissioned, AAI will shift international arrivals into the building and will pull down the old building. Another terminal will be built in its place and will be linked to the integrated terminal.
