Amin Nayyar elaborates, “With the advent of conscious architecture and engineering designs, we’re shifting towards design consciousness focused on the thermal comfort of workers, indoor air quality, waste management, harnessing of renewable energy resources, durability and safety of building materials and construction. And ultimately the return on investment for an industry owner over a sufficiently long time.”
ANA Design Studio has consequently made thoughtful design interventions in the New Plasser India Railway Equipment Manufacturing facility. We considered the hot climatic conditions of South Gujarat. Innovative techniques such as using radiant floors and ceilings and laying geothermal earth tubes within the foundation pits have helped reduce energy consumption by 50%. This also proved to be 90% more efficient than traditional systems.
Another example of ANA Design Studio’s competence is the Reliance Technology Group Research Facility at Navi Mumbai. The facility is one-of-a-kind in the country. This is not simply due to its massive size but also the equipment and services it houses. It was ANA Design Studio’s rigorous experience specializing in the field of laboratory projects like SPL Diagnostics that helped them achieve it. Their versatile portfolio also sports retail and commercial projects such as Reliance Retail Hypermall in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, and Decathlon Stores in Delhi and Jaipur. Upon being asked what matters more in a commercial design – its USP or its contextual relevance, the Managing Director articulates, “Retail development disconnected from other facilities and functions seldom works out well for the investor or developer. As designers, it is crucial to understand the feasibility within a particular context first. Only then can we propose solutions to create a chain of activities to promote retail spaces as a part of larger-scaled mixed-use development.
Uniqueness in offering a diverse experience raises the value of retail development. This is done by setting the place apart from conventional shopping malls and the prevalent online shopping habit. Therefore, it is our duty as designers to evoke a unique character within a retail space to attract potential customers within the precinct. We can strive to achieve a sense of place and ‘hook’ anchor by articulating a building’s form and aesthetics to offer it a landmark identity. By designing the entire journey of the visitor from its entry to the circulation within the complex to the exit, and by creating a hierarchy of open public/semi-public spaces for gatherings to reinforce a sense of ownership, we can achieve this goal.
Lastly, a visionary approach is necessary for commercial development in appealing to a landowner, developer, or investor. Let’s say a project we design today for the current needs of local buyers and sellers does a pretty decent job. Now, as our generation experienced it first hand, the world and our lifestyles can be impacted heavily by small interventions in our surroundings. The pandemic transformed the way we were living our lives. Such large-scale transformation cannot be predicted, however, as space designers, we ought to integrate the scope of expansion in our space planning, accommodation of advanced technologies, and building engineering systems without scraping off the built, transformation of building functions without disrupting the construct, and comfortable handling of peak human/vehicle traffic conditions and emergencies such as fire and chemical hazards and natural calamities.”
