The proposed project envisages the construction of Aqua university at Narasapuram in the first phase and Research centre in the second phase at Biyyaputippa Village, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh.
Overview of Aqua University & Research Centre
Andhra Pradesh is the third state in India to have Aqua University after Tamil Nadu and Kerala. With a 975 km coastline, the state leads the nation in terms of aquaculture production. For thousands of fishermen and aqua farmers, the cultivation of prawns and fish is one of the most significant sources of income. The State Government has decided to build the Aqua University and Research Centre in West Godavari in order to meet the demand for qualified aquaculture professionals.
The state currently has a serious shortage of trained experts, but the issue can soon be resolved with the building of a university. The Andhra Pradesh government would provide 350 acres of land in West Godavari district for the establishment of an aqua university and research center along with other administrative and college buildings. The university will be constructed first, followed by the research centre.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy officiated the groundbreaking ceremony on November 21 for the university and research centre in Narsapuram which is anticipated to cost INR 222 crore.
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone on 21 November for the construction of a fishing harbour close to Biyyaputippa. The fishing harbour will be built in 150 acres and will be beneficial to the local fishermen. The construction of the harbour will significantly improve the livelihoods of 6,000 local fishermen in the Narasapuram and Mogalturu mandals.
Significance of the Project
Aquaculture research will be helpful to boost production and reduce virus-related crop losses. In the past 40 years, aqua farmers have accumulated extensive knowledge on the cultivation and exportation of fish and prawns to other states and countries. However, the losses must be minimised so that the farmers will not suffer the consequences.
