Center greenlights 63,246 INR-Crore Chennai Metro Rail Phase II

The Union Cabinet recently greenlit the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project on Thursday, October 3. With an estimated cost of 63,246 INR-Crore, the project is slated for completion by 2027. The approval includes three key corridors—Madhavaram to SIPCOT (corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor 5). 

These three key corridors will cover approximately 118.9 Km, and feature 128 stations. Chennai Metro Rail Phase II includes three corridors. Corridor 3 extends from Madhavaram to SIPCOT over 45.8 Km with 50 stations. Additionally, Corridor 4 connects Light House to Poonamalle Bypass over 26.1 Km, featuring 30 stations. Lastly, Corridor 5 stretches from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, covering around 47 Km and includes 48 stations.

Once fully operational, the total network of Chennai Metro will stretch to 173 Km, making it a vital part of the city’s urban transport infrastructure. This expansion will greatly enhance connectivity to rapidly growing areas, especially Sholinganallur, which is a hub for the bustling south Chennai IT corridor.
