Riya Fernandes Jul 13, 2024 0

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will construct its third depot for Phase II in Semmancheri. Initially, the plan targeted Siruseri SIPCOT, but now Semmancheri offers a larger space for this ambitious project. Currently, the plans for the depot are under study.

The Tamil Nadu government will fund the construction, and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been finalized. Moreover, the team is preparing the tender document. Once the funding is secured and the tender is awarded, CMRL expects to complete the Semmancheri depot within two and a half years. This depot will also support property development.

For the SIPCOT site, stabling lines will be built to accommodate four trains with six coaches each. Meanwhile, the construction continues on the other two depots for Phase II. One depot rises in Poonamallee along corridor 4, situated between Lighthouse and Poonamallee Bypass. The other, located in Madhavaram, serves corridor 5, lying between Madhavaram and Shollinganallur Metro stations. For corridors 1 and 2, CMRL operates two depots, strategically positioned at Koyambedu and Wimco Nagar.
