Civil Hospital to be reconstructed to house 1400 beds with modern amenities

Asia’s largest government hospital, Civil Hospital, is set to be reconstructed to house 1,400 beds with ultra-modern technology. The Gujarat government has approved an estimated investment of 568 INR Crore for the reconstruction of two main hospital buildings.

The Gujarat Healthcare Department has prepared the master plan for the project, whereas the PIU (Project Implementation Unit) will oversee the redevelopment. The project is anticipated to be completed within two years of commencement.

The scope of work includes:

  • Demolishing Blocks A, B, C, and D of the existing hospital building and converting them into an 8-storey new structure. It will accommodate nearly 900 beds along with an OPD, with an estimated investment of 367 INR Crore.
  • Replacing the old TB hospital with a 500-bed, 8-storey Infectious Disease Control Hospital. The projected construction cost of this block is 201 INR Crore.
  • Furthermore, the facility will also include a collective parking facility for 500 cars and 5000 two-wheelers, ward-wise nursing stations, doctor’s desks, medical storage facilities for clinical accessories, floor-wise waiting areas, modular operation theatres, a cafeteria, a kitchen for indoor patients, an auditorium, etc.
  • The government has also planned to keep 250 beds in isolation to cater to infectious diseases (as a post-pandemic measure).
