The Ministry of Coal has announced plans to invest INR 26,000 Cr in an array of extensive railway projects, aiming to establish comprehensive multimodal connectivity.

These projects align with the strategic framework of the national coal logistic plan and emphasize the integration of first-mile connectivity (FMC) through strategically positioned railway sidings next to coal mines.

According to the coal ministry, a total of 67 first-mile connectivity (FMC) projects are currently underway across Coal India Limited (CIL), Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), and Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL). This collective effort will enhance the capacity by 885 million tons. These projects are divided into three phases, all aimed at achieving a mechanized handling capacity of nearly 1 billion tons of coal.

Presently, the Ministry of Railways is collaborating on the construction of 13 railway lines to expand coal distribution capabilities, with projects in various stages of development.
