Coastal Road: BMC constructing 550M-long underpass for south-bound vehicles

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken the construction of a new 55M-long vehicular underpass under the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP). The underpass is poised to facilitate southbound travel from Prabhadevi/ Worli to Nariman Point.

The upcoming underpass will extend between Worli Seaface and Worli interchange of MCRP. It uses the conventional Austrian tunnelling method for construction. The road will start near the JK Kapur Chowk at Worli and end near the vehicular interchange at the Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk near Worli Seaface.

Furthermore, the upcoming vehicular underpass will be the second underground road of MCRP after the 2 km-long undersea tunnel between Marine Drive and Priyadarshini Park. It is expected to be operational by the end of October this year. The Phase II of MCRP, spanning 10.58 km and estimated at INR 13,000 Crore, will be operational by May 2024.
