Odia University, a first of its kind regional language university proposed by the Government of Odisha, will soon be coming up at Bakula Bana in Sakhigopal of Puri district.
The university is envisaged to promote and propagate Odia language across the country. It will offer PG courses in Odia language and literature as well as facilitate research on different aspects of the language.
Bakula Bana Vidyalaya, set up by Panchasakha (five friends)- Gopabandhu Das, Krupasindhu Mishra, Harihar Das, Pandit Mishra and Nilakantha Das- was the first model open school of the State at Sakhigopal in 1909.
Now after around 109 years, the State Government is going to set up Odia University in the same place. Based on the historic importance of the location, the Odia University will foster research on Odia literature and will function towards development of the regional language.
On October 2018, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid foundation stone of the proposed Odia University at Sakhigopal in Puri district.
Moreover, the Odisha Bridge & Construction Corporation Limited would be undertaking the development of the new Odia University which is spread over an area of 9.42 acres.
The project includes the construction of an Administrative Block, Boy’s Hostel, Girl’s Hostel, Auditorium, Cafeteria, and Five schools of learning consisting of classrooms, lecture rooms, toilets etc.
