The detailed project report (DPR) for the INR 41,000 Crore Great Nicobar Island transhipment port nears finalization. The proposed facility is envisaged to be developed in four phases. This colossal project is expected to handle 16 Million containers per year.
The estimated cost for Phase 1 of the transhipment port is INR 18,000 Crore and is expected to be operational by 2028. This phase includes constructing breakwaters, dredging, reclamation, berths, storage areas, buildings, and utilities. Furthermore, it will manage over 4 Million containers.

Additionally, other projects planned around the Great Nicobar Island transhipment port include an airport, a township, and a power plant. Located on the international trade route, the port lies near existing transhipment terminals such as Singapore, Klang, and Colombo.
