Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin laid the foundation stone for the Porunai museum in Tirunelveli district. The ceremony took place through a video conference from Chennai’s secretariat on International Museum Day.
Earlier, in September 2021, Stalin announced plans to build a top-notch museum. The chosen site, spanning 13.02 acres in Palayamkottai taluk’s Kulavanigarpuram village, was identified at the Melapalayam-Reddiarpatti hills along the national highway.
The museum, covering 55,000 SqFt of construction area will cost approximately 33.2 INR-crore. It will exhibit rare artefacts discovered during excavations at Adichanallur, Korkai, and Sivakalai.
Divided into four blocks, the museum will include an administrative building. Visitors can explore various captivating items like utensils, terracotta, glass bangles, tools made of copper and iron, coins, burial urns, beads, and more. These artefacts provide valuable insights into the ancient Tamil civilization, with Adichanallur representing its birthplace, Korkai as a prominent port town during the Sangam era, and Sivakalai as evidence of Tamil knowledge of iron usage.
Minister of Finance and Human Resources Thangam Thennarasu, Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu, Principal Secretary of Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department K Manivasan, and other officials actively attended the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of this project.
