GAIL India Ltd. has announced a significant investment of INR 60,000 Crore in setting up a 1500 KTA Ethane Cracker Project in the Astha district of Madhya Pradesh. The MP Industrial Development Corporation will allocate approximately 800 Hectares of land, a process that the state government has already initiated.
The company has proposed to the State Government to provide adequate enablers for the project. It is anticipated to break ground in February 2025, with production beginning in 2030–31. Gail intends to import ethane for the project and has signed an MoU with ONGC and Shell Energy.

This ambitious project seeks to produce 1.5 million tonnes of ethane per year (MTPA), a critical feedstock for producing petrochemicals like plastics, adhesives, and synthetic rubber. GAIL’s new facility will meet the strong domestic demand for petrochemicals, which is expected to nearly triple to USD 1 Trillion by 2040.
