On July 8, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for India’s second railway manufacturing unit in Kazipet, Telangana. This unit aims to produce 1,200 wagons in its first year and scale up to 2,400 wagons from the second year onwards.
While Braithwaite & Co, a Kolkata-based public-sector undertaking, operates India’s first railway manufacturing unit, the Kazipet unit will be the first established by the railways themselves. Spanning 160 acres, the unit will have the potential to expand its manufacturing capacity for wagons and rolling stock.
The unit is expected to be an environmentally friendly facility, incorporating features such as a solar power plant, sewage treatment plant, rainwater harvesting structure, and natural daylighting. It will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including robotic painting of wagons, computerized machinery for precision cutting, and modern material storage and handling units. During the initial years, the project is expected to generate 1,200 job opportunities. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited will undertake the construction of the unit, with an expected completion date of February 22, 2025.
