In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion along the Sion-Panvel Highway, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has undertaken the development of the Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Road project. This initiative is poised to transform commuter experiences within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), promising enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times for thousands of commuters.

Project Highlights:
The Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Road project entails the construction of a 1.763 km-long tunnel on the proposed 5.490 km Kharghar-Turbhe Link Road (KTLR), with an estimated expenditure of INR 2,100 Crore. It is slated to be completed within four years from its commencement.
The overall project includes a twin tunnel section spanning approximately 1.8 km and an elevated viaduct extending 3.4 km, featuring four lanes in both directions. The design incorporates two unidirectional tunnels to ensure optimal safety measures for commuters.
It will start opposite Juinagar Railway Station, traversing along the Sion-Panvel Highway before ending at the 30 m-wide existing road junction of Central Park and Gurudwara in Kharghar via Juinagar.

Significance:
Once operational, the Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Road is expected to significantly reduce travel time by approximately 30 minutes. The project aims to enhance accessibility and foster seamless connectivity within the MMR, between key nodes of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane.
One of the primary objectives of the Tunnel Road is to establish direct links between key areas of Navi Mumbai, including Vashi, Juinagar, and Nerul. This strategic interconnectivity is poised to catalyze economic development and urban expansion within the region, unlocking new avenues for growth and prosperity.
