Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has emerged as the lowest bidder for the construction of the proposed 3.8-km tunnel between Orange Gate and Marine Drive, providing a significant boost to the project. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is responsible for building the tunnel, will connect the Eastern Freeway with the upcoming coastal road.
The 3.8-km long twin tunnel road will connect Orange Gate on the Eastern Freeway to Marine Drive on Mumbai’s coastal road, offering 2+2 lanes in each tunnel along with an emergency lane. The financial bids for the project were opened on July 20, with the MMRDA initially estimating the cost to be INR 6,000 crore. However, L&T and J Kumar Infraprojects, the two final bidders, quoted INR 7,765 crore and INR 8,589 crore, respectively.
The tender approving committee, led by the state government, will decide on the contractor’s appointment before issuing the Letter of Intent. Once completed, the tunnel will become the third-longest road tunnel in Mumbai, with the existing 1 km tunnel road as part of the Eastern Freeway and a 2.7 km tunnel as part of the coastal road project.
