The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved an estimated 6,394.13 INR-Crore Poshir water project, a significant step toward bolstering water supply infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
This ambitious initiative involves constructing a dam on the Poshir River near Kurung village in Karjat taluka, Raigad district. The dam will have a total capacity of 12.344 TMC, with 9.721 TMC of usable storage allocated for drinking water (7.933 TMC) and industrial use (1.859 TMC). The Poshir water project will supply water to key urban centers, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur.

Additionally, the capital cost is proportionately shared among beneficiary institutions, ensuring equitable funding. The Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation will execute the project on a deposit basis, streamlining implementation. Furthermore, the project aligns with the region’s rapid urbanization. It aims to enhance drinking water availability and support industrial growth.
