The lighthouse at Surathkal near Mangaluru will be developed into a tourist destination.
The ministry of shipping has proposed to develop it by improving amenities and facilities. The directorate general of lighthouse and lightships has finalized the architectural design for the improvement project.
The development project involves the undertaking of several works, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Dakshina Kannada member of Parliament, said.
Indicating the ministry’s interest in the project is a letter from Mansukh L Mandaviya, minister of state for shipping (independent) charge to Nalin Kumar. A capsule lift will be installed at the lighthouse to facilities movement of tourists to the top of the structure.
A bridge will connect the ground to the lift. The project will entail setting up a public entry gate, security cabin, and ticketing counter, the minister said in reply to the MP’s letter.
