The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved significant Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) projects in Varanasi and Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh. The projects, amounting to over 400 INR-Crore, aim to conserve and rejuvenate the Ganga River.
In Varanasi, the NMCG approved the interception and diversion of the Durga Drain and the construction of a 60 MLD (Million Liters per Day) capacity STP. This project is estimated at a cost of 274.31 INR-Crore. Furthermore, it includes a 75 MLD main pumping station and other essential structures for long-term wastewater management and pollution control.

In Bhadohi, another project was approved by NMCG to prevent untreated sewage from flowing into the Varuna River. With an investment of 127.26 INR-Crore, this project will establish three STPs with capacities of 17 MLD, 5 MLD, and 3 MLD. It will also include an extensive sewer network to tap four major drains.
Additionally, NMCG launched the “Ganga Through The Ages – A Literary Bioscope” program to foster public participation in Ganga conservation through literature, education, and community engagement. This initiative, in collaboration with the National Book Trust, will highlight the historical, spiritual, and ecological significance of the river.
