Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)‘s Chhattisgarh-based arm – Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), is taking a significant step towards improving its carbon footprint. They are installing the state’s first 15-megawatt (MW) floating solar project in their Maroda-1 reservoir. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, conserve energy, and further promote renewable energy.

The floating solar plant will be set up in the Durg district of Chhattisgarh. NTPC-SAIL Power Supply Company Limited (NSPCL), a 50:50 joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and SAIL, will implement this project.

The floating solar plant will generate an estimated annual green power of 34.26 million units, which will be consumed by BSP as captive power. Furthermore, it is expected to reduce approximately 28,330 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The tender process has been completed, and the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Contract (EPC) is likely to be awarded shortly. The project is scheduled to be completed by next year.

Additionally, another solar power plant of 35 MW is proposed by SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant through NSPCL in the next phase. For this, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been prepared, and the tendering process is expected to start soon. This initiative not only contributes to green energy but also aligns with SAIL’s commitment to sustainable practices.
