Siemens India, on Wednesday, May 15, announced plans for significant investments in its manufacturing facilities. The company has committed to spending an estimated INR 1,000 Crore over the next two years to expand four facilities in India. Here are the key details:
Siemens India intends to expand its gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) factory in Goa by approximately 23%. The expansion will allow the factory to manufacture around 22,000 feeders from its Ring Main Unit and 1,500 panels from its medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear manufacturing unit. Siemens will invest an estimated INR 333 Crore in this venture.
The main function of a GIS substation is to switch, separate, transform, measure, and distribute electrical energy in power systems. The expansion will be carried out in phases over three years, starting from 2024-25, and will be funded through internal accruals.

Siemens will also establish a new greenfield metro train assembly setup for its Metro Rail systems segment in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The facility will be set up by 2028 in a phased manner over an estimated investment of INR 186 Crore. Initially, it will be used to manufacture export products.
Siemens aims to make both factories globally benchmarked sustainable facilities, contributing to the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar” programs. Additionally, the company has planned capacity expansions for its power transformer factory in Kalwa and the vacuum interrupter factory in Goa. These projects were announced in November 2023.
