Tata Power Company is poised to make a substantial investment of INR 70,000 Crore in Tamil Nadu, targeting the development of 10 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind units within the next five to seven years. The formal announcement of this ambitious 10 GW generation initiative is expected on Monday, January 08, coinciding with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the state government and Tata Power.
This is in addition to the company’s new greenfield 4.3 GW solar cell and module manufacturing facility coming up at Tirunelveli, entailing an investment of INR 4,000 Crore. Additionally, Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, will set up a 41 MW captive solar plant in Thoothukudi to support the operations of this newly proposed greenfield manufacturing facility.

The captive solar plant, set to commission within 12 months of signing the project development agreement (PDA), will annually generate 101 million units of electricity and offset approximately 72,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. TPREL has formed TP Govardhan Creatives to develop, operate, and maintain this facility for TP Solar.
By FY25, TP Solar’s manufacturing plant is expected to commence commercial production of cells and modules. The new captive solar plant will boost TPREL’s total capacity to 7,877 MW, including 3,720 MW of projects in progress and an operational capacity of 4,157 MW, incorporating 3,154 MW of solar energy and 1,003 MW of wind energy.
