Varkala Sivagiri railway station redevelopment works begin

The redevelopment work at Varkala Sivagiri railway station has officially commenced. This project, a part of the Amrit Bharat Station scheme, is being executed by various agencies contracted by the joint venture of Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). The JV secured the redevelopment contract in December 2023.

The Varkala Sivagiri railway station has an estimated project cost of INR 123.36 Crore. The project’s initial development work is advancing rapidly with an expected completion period of 30 months. The project envisages the development of airport-like facilities with separate arrival and departure corridors. The main station building spreads over an anticipated 9,944 SqM and features enhanced passenger facilities, with striking interiors and an overall improved experience.

Additionally, the upgradation work comprises departure air-concourse, arrival foot over-bridge (FOB), the extension of the existing FOB, substations, internal roads, pathways, stormwater drains, etc. The facility will further showcase passenger-centric infrastructure such as ticketing counters, waiting areas, information kiosks, water facilities, toilets, retail spaces for food and other facilities, among other services.

The JV between KRDCL and RVNL had earlier secured the contract for the redevelopment of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station at an estimated cost of INR 439 Crore. The project will be executed on EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) mode and is expected to be completed within 42 months.
