Overview:

In FY 2023-24, the West Zone of India witnessed extensive developments in its water supply & distribution sector. Among the notable state-level initiatives, Gujarat launched the Saurashtra-Narmada Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) Yojana. This mega project is aimed at addressing water scarcity in drought-prone areas by channeling excess water from the Narmada River to arid regions. Maharashtra introduced new projects to improve water distribution in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions. The state also emphasized tackling acute water shortages in remote areas. Meanwhile, Goa made significant strides in wastewater treatment and improving water use in its coastal regions. Consequently, the state aimed to balance tourism demands with sustainable water management practices. 

Similarly, the South Zone made notable advancements, supported by substantial funding from the JJM and AMRUT 2.0 schemes. Karnataka’s ambitious Upper Bhadra Project aimed to alleviate water shortages in drought-prone districts by establishing a network of reservoirs and pipelines. Kerala introduced advanced water management systems to tackle water logging and distribution issues, particularly in flood-prone areas. This effort was complemented by improvements in urban water infrastructure funded through AMRUT 2.0. Tamil Nadu also made strides in water conservation by promoting rainwater harvesting and rehabilitating reservoirs, which enhanced overall water management across the state. Additionally, smaller territories like Lakshadweep and Pondicherry benefited from targeted investments to enhance desalination processes and upgrade water supply infrastructure. Thereby supporting local communities and boosting tourism.

Meanwhile, the Central Zone received approximately INR 4,500 crore under JJM and INR 2,200 crore under AMRUT 2.0. In Madhya Pradesh, significant projects were launched to tackle water scarcity in the Bundelkhand and Malwa regions. The state focused on constructing new reservoirs, upgrading treatment plants, and expanding water distribution networks. Additionally, efforts were made to restore traditional water bodies and enhance rainwater harvesting to boost water sustainability. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh, with its large tribal population and scattered rural communities, directed its efforts toward improving water access in remote and underserved areas. The state invested in building water storage facilities and expanding rural water pipelines. Both states emphasized sustainability through water conservation techniques and infrastructure rehabilitation.

A. WEST ZONE

Construction Projects in the West Zone

In the last financial year, Biltrax tracked nearly 286 water supply & distribution projects in the West Zone through its BX-2 platform, with an estimated construction cost of INR 26,279 Crore.

Of the total projects tracked by BX-2 in the West Zone during FY 2023-24, Maharashtra stands out with the highest total construction value. The state undertook 203 projects with a combined construction cost of INR 22,968 Crore, accounting for 87.40% of the total in the region. Central to this progress is the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ initiative, which aims to enhance water access in rural areas. Major urban projects in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur have focused on modernizing water supply infrastructure and increasing treatment capacities. These cities also adopted smart water management technologies to optimize usage and reduce losses. Additionally, the state launched the ‘Maharashtra Water Grid Project’. This major scheme is designed to improve inter-regional water transfer and distribution, addressing regional disparities and boosting overall water security.

B. SOUTH ZONE

Construction Projects in the South Zone

In the last financial year, Biltrax tracked nearly 522 water supply & distribution projects in the South Zone through its BX-2 platform, with an estimated construction cost of INR 21,931 Crore.

Of the total projects tracked by BX-2 in the South Zone during FY 2023-24, Telangana stands out with the highest total construction value. The state undertook 14 projects with a combined construction cost of INR 7,264 Crore, accounting for 33.12% of the total in the region. Notably, Telangana focused on the ‘Mission Bhagiratha’ initiative, which aims to provide safe and piped drinking water to all households across rural and urban areas. This initiative includes expansion of water supply networks, construction of new water treatment plants, and upgrading existing infrastructure. The ‘Telangana Water Grid Project’ has also been a key component, designed to ensure equitable water distribution and address regional imbalances.

Additionally, the state advanced with the launch of the ‘Narmada Clean and Green Initiative’. The project aims to reduce pollution, improve riverfront development, and deploy advanced wastewater treatment technologies. Combined with investments in rural and urban water infrastructure, these efforts are designed to address both immediate and long-term water challenges. These further ensure better access and sustainability for the region.
