The upcoming bridge aims to decongest traffic between Srirangam Island and Trichy mainland. The highways department also plans to redevelop the approach vicinity of the new bridge near the Melachinthamani-Odathurai bridge junction. A major roundabout is also planned to facilitate the seamless entry and exit of vehicles entering and leaving Srirangam Island and Odathurai Road, which merges with the Trichy-Chennai National Highway.
