The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) has approved the construction of 27 stations and 2 lines of the Gorakhpur Light Metro (Metrolite) in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Gorakhpur Light Metro is a light rail transit (LRT) system proposed for the city of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The estimated cost of the project is INR 4,672 Crore and is envisioned to be completed by the year 2024.
Overview of Gorakhpur Light Metro
In 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation to construct a metro system in Gorakhpur. In March 2019, Rail India Technical and Economic Service completed the project’s feasibility study and detailed project report and submitted those to the corporation. On October 9, 2020, the state cabinet gave its approval to the report.
The Public Investment Board approved the first phase of the Gorakhpur metrolite project at a meeting in New Delhi that was presided over by the Union budget secretary and expenditure. The first phase of the Metrolite project’s 15.14 kilometre stretch, which includes the Gorakhnath Mandir, Gorakhpur Railway Station, Gorakhpur University, and the recently opened AIIMS, will have 14 elevated stations built along it, it was decided at a meeting in November with a total of 26 participants.
The project will benefit an estimated 15.75 lakh people. An estimated cost of INR 4,672 crores will be spent in the Metrolite project in Gorakhpur. Around 55% of the project’s expenses will be covered by a soft loan that would be secured from European investors, who previously contributed money for the metro projects in Lucknow and Kanpur. The remaining 60% would be split between the central and state governments.
The central government will provide about 20% of the total in the form of bogies, rail, and other rolling stock. The state must raise 25% of the money with its own resources. A bank representative visited the Gorakhpur proposed Metro line two days before Diwali and spoke with District Magistrate Krishna Karunesh about the project.
