Construction starts for Arunachal Pradesh’s highest hydropower project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, March 11, laid the foundation stone for the 2.88GW Dibang multipurpose hydropower project, the highest concrete-gravity dam in the country, in Arunachal Pradesh. The National Hydropower Corporation (NHPC) will manage the upcoming project.

Located in the Lower Dibang Valley district, the Dibang hydropower project will stand at a towering height of 278M. The project is being developed at an estimated cost of USD 3.85 Billion and will generate 11.22 Billion units of hydropower annually. It is anticipated to be completed by February 2032. The project will generate electricity and contribute to the socio-economic growth of the region.

A world first will be achieved with the Dibang Dam, which will place more than 500,000 cubic metres (m3) of concrete in just one month. It will employ a capacity of 1.28 Billion m3 to achieve flood moderation and will be maintained below the full reservoir level during the monsoon season. The project is poised to set a global benchmark as the tallest RCC dam in the world.
