Greater Chennai Corporation aims to complete construction of Chennai’s first steel flyover by September 2024

The Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to complete the construction of its first steel flyover on South Usman Road by Mid-2024. J Ramakrishnan, the Corporate Commissioner, inspected the ongoing construction on Monday, October 23 and instructed the contractor to fast-track the work.

The steel flyover is 1.2 Km long with an estimated cost of 131 INR-Crore. The construction of the 8.40 m wide flyover started in March 2023 and includes – a 140 m  long up-ramp at CIT Nagar main road, a 120 m long up-ramp at Usman Road, and a down-ramp stretching 100 m. It also includes 177 piles (out of which 89 are completed) and 53 piers (out of which 13 are completed).

The steel flyover will cover – South Usman Road – Burkit Road and Madley Junction; South Usman Road – South West Boag and New Boag Junction; and CIT Nagar North Road T-Junction.

As of October 2023, 40 % construction of the project is completed. This flyover will be the first steel flyover in Chennai and the second in Tamil Nadu. The expected deadline for the project is September 2024, but the Corporation is planning to complete it by Mid-2024. Additionally, the construction of 10 flyovers worth the estimated cost of 521.2 INR-Crore is ongoing simultaneously in the City.
