The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has started widening the Mumbai-Pune Expressway at two toll plazas as part of its plan to expand the six-lane speed corridor into an eight-lane stretch. MSRDC had submitted the proposal for the widening of the expressway to the state government in August. The project is expected to be cleared in two phases.
The overall estimated cost of the project is 5,000 INR-Crore, including the cost of construction and land acquisition. Currently, the work on the 6 km stretch from Khalapur to Khopoli and 1.5 km near Talegaon toll plaza is under construction.

MSRDC has started the work of road widening at certain spots under the first phase of the project. The structures are anticipated to be completed by 2026. Phase II will include the construction of two tunnels on each side of Madap, Bhatan, and Kamshet. The project aims to mitigate increasing traffic congestion on the expressway.
