The Union Cabinet on Wednesday, December 27, approved the widening of the 135km stretch of Khowai-Harina road in Tripura. The estimated cost of this project is INR 2486.78 Crore including INR 1511.70 Crore loan component from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the ODA (Official Development Assistance) scheme.
The scope of work involves the improvement and widening of two lanes with paved shoulder of the road from 101.300km (Khowai) to 236.213km (Harina) of NH-208 stretching a total length of 134.913km in Tripura. The anticipated completion period for this project is two years with an additional five years for maintenance of these National Highway stretches post-completion.

The project aims to improve interstate connectivity between Assam and Tripura by providing alternate access via NH-208 aside from the existing NH-8. It will also help reduce transit time and provide safer connectivity for commuters.
