The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways(MORTH) has greenlit a whopping INR 24,000 Crore project to build a brand new four-lane road from Umiam to Silchar via East Jaintia Hills district. Of the total approved amount, INR 12,000 Crore has been allocated for constructing an approximate 100-km stretch from Umiam to Malidor (Meghalaya-Assam border). The remaining INR 12,000 Crore will fund the construction of the rest of the four-lane road in Assam.
This upcoming four-lane road will replace the existing National Highway-6, which is in poor condition in parts of the East Jaintia Hills district. It will facilitate easier travel from Meghalaya to Silchar, Mizoram, and Tripura, as well as link to Guwahati in Assam.
