The Maharashtra Government’s Water Resources Department signed three MOUs on Monday, August 12, to develop pump storage hydro power projects. The projects will involve an estimated investment of INR 24,631 Crore and a combined capacity of 5,630-megawatts (MW).

The water resources department signed MOUs with state-owned Mahagenco, Tata Power, and Avaada Group for the following projects.

Mahagenco, a key player in this endeavor, plans to develop an 80 MW pump storage project at the Koyna left bank dam foot power house. This new facility will further enhance the existing Koyna hydro power project’s capacity.

Additionally, Tata Power will develop two major hydro power projects. The first includes a 1,000 MW facility at Bhivpuri in Raigad district. The second one entails a 1,800 MW project at Shirawata in Pune district. These projects, set to be commissioned by 2027 and 2028, will involve an estimated capital investment of INR 13,000 Crore.

These include the 1,500 MW Pawana-Falyan project in Pune and Raigad districts and the 1,250 MW Kumbhavade project in Kolhapur and Ratnagiri districts. Avaada plans to invest around INR 14,000 Crore in these projects over the next five to seven years.

These MOUs will help the state achieve its ambitious goal of generating 50% of its total power from renewable sources by 2030. Consequently, the Maharashtra hydro power projects will play a crucial role in meeting the state’s growing energy demands while furthering its renewable energy goals.
