Maharashtra approves 7,015 INR-Crore Nar Par Girna River linking project

On Sunday, August 25, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved the ambitious 7,015 INR-Crore ‘Nar Par Girna’ river linking project. The project entails the construction of nine new dams and channeling surplus water from west-flowing rivers to districts in North Maharashtra. This is the second mega project which received clearance from the Governor.

It is estimated that the project will irrigate approximately 53,626 Hectares in Nashik, 38,304 Hectares in Jalgaon, and 3,830 Hectares in Aurangabad, all within the Girna sub-basin. Additionally, the Cabinet plans to pump a total of 305 Meters of water to the Chankapur Dam in the Tapi basin. The Nar Par Girna project will significantly benefit the Nashik and Jalgaon districts in North Maharashtra.

Previously, the Cabinet also approved the Wainganga Nalganga project, worth an estimated 87,342 INR-Crore. Under this initiative, Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Yavatmal, Akola, and Buldhana districts in Vidarbha will benefit, bringing irrigation to 3.71 lakh Hectares of land. The Maharashtra Cabinet also approved the swift completion of 228 long-pending slum rehabilitation projects.
