The Maharashtra cabinet recently approved a 28 Km-long Khadakwasla-Phursungi Tunnel to prevent water leakage and boost the city’s water supply. This project is expected to conserve approximately 2.8 TMC of water, sufficient to meet the needs for two months. It will also reduce water seepage and provide extra water for agriculture.

The water resources department plans to build a ‘D’ shaped tunnel, 7.80 meters wide, 3.90 meters high, and 1.950 meters in circular height. The Khadakwasla-Phursungi Tunnel will increase the canal’s capacity to 1,510 Cusecs. Additionally, water will flow by gravity to Phursungi, saving about two and a half TMC of water. This innovative design will help prevent water pollution, leakage, and evaporation.
