BMC launches 1,591 INR-Crore Road Concretization Initiative to enhance infrastructure along EEH & WEH

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a significant project to enhance Mumbai’s infrastructure through the concretization of all roads. This initiative primarily includes service roads, slip roads, and junctions along the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and Western Express Highway (WEH).

With an estimated cost of 1,591 INR-Crore, the project aims to improve road durability and safety. It is set to be completed within two years, enhancing connectivity and minimizing long-term maintenance issues. The authorities have identified several service and slip roads in poor condition and urgently need repairs. Given the ongoing concretization, the BMC has decided to include these roads and junctions under the project. A defect liability period of 10 years will ensure both quality and durability.

Last year, the BMC awarded contracts worth an estimated 6,080 INR-Crore for Phase 1, marking its largest civic contract. Phase 2 will allocate another 6,000 INR-Crore into additional road work. However, since the project started in January 2023, only 30% of the concretization has been completed.

Currently, Mumbai’s road network spans approximately 2,050 Km, with 1,000 Km already concretized. The BMC plans to complete the concretization of 324 Km in the eastern and western suburbs within 240 days, from October 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025.
