This project envisages the development of NHAI’s 121 Km-long Guwahati Ring Road to boost regional connectivity and ease urban traffic congestion in Assam.
Project Overview:
Contributing significantly to the development of the Northeast region, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is spearheading the ambitious Guwahati Ring Road project. This new ring road is designed to enhance intra-state connectivity and ease congestion in and around Guwahati.
The proposed ring road will span approximately 121 Km and will be executed in three major sections. The total estimated construction cost of the project 5,729 INR-Crore. On Thursday, April 5, NHAI signed a concession agreement with Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt Ltd to develop this critical road infrastructure. It will be developed on the DBFOT model, with a 30-year concession period. This furthermore includes 4 years for construction.
Scope of the Guwahati Ring Road Project
The project includes three distinct sections aimed at improving traffic flow and regional connectivity:
- Section 1: Northern Guwahati Bypass
This involves the construction of a 4-lane greenfield access-controlled road stretching 55.54 Km. It will connect Baihata Chariali to Sonapur via Kurua and Chandrapur, forming the backbone of the Northern Guwahati Bypass. - Section 2: Widening of NH-27
This phase focuses on widening the existing 4-lane bypass to a 6-lane corridor. Covering a stretch of 7.763 Km, it will extend from Jayanagar Underpass to Jorabat Junction. This section will further facilitate smoother vehicular movement on NH-27. - Section 3: Improvement of NH-27 Stretches
Spanning 58.129 Km, this section includes the upgradation of existing 4/6-lane road segments of NH-27, excluding the Section 2 alignment. Additionally, a major 3 km bridge will be constructed over the Brahmaputra River, significantly improving inter-district and interstate travel.

The Guwahati Ring Road will enable seamless connectivity for long-distance traffic on the East-West Corridor of NH-27. This corridor serves as a crucial gateway to the Northeast Region. By rerouting vehicles around the city, the project will significantly decongest Guwahati. It will also reduce travel times for traffic headed to Silchar, Nagaland, Tripura, and West Bengal/Bihar. Moreover, the ring road will facilitate improved access to key regional hubs such as Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, Jogighopa, and Barpeta. This boost in connectivity will support economic activity as well as logistics efficiency in Assam and the wider Northeastern states.
